Kafka UI tools compared — with the emphasis on data work

Kafbat UI, Conduktor, Confluent Console, Offset Explorer, KafkIO, Redpanda Console, AKHQ and Lenses all let you look at a Kafka topic. What separates them is what you can do with the data: filter languages, saved filters, test data, live multi-topic views, import/export, automation and AI. We compare all of it — including the places where Streamyard is not the right answer.

The honest ground rules

This page is written by the Kafka Streamyard team, so bias is possible — but we tried to make it the comparison we would want to read. Ratings come from each vendor's public documentation and product pages as of October 2026. ✓ means the capability exists fully; ◐ means partial or limited; — means no equivalent. Where a competitor is genuinely better, we say so. If we got something wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

✓ Full support ◐ Partial / limited — Not available

One roadmap note worth knowing while you read: Streamyard is a single-user desktop today, but a multi-user web edition is in development on the same codebase — the Electron UI already runs mostly in a browser, and the backend already carries session and device primitives designed for a performant shared deployment.

Choose by what you actually need

Deep data work + manual testing

Kafka Streamyard

You live in topic data: structured filtering on JSON and XML, reusable test-data samples, multi-topic live timelines, playbooks, file-style copying, and a desktop workspace that persists everything.

Free, multi-user admin UI

Kafbat UI, Redpanda Console, AKHQ

You need a solid open-source web UI for browsing, producing, consumer groups and cluster admin — without budget or procurement.

Team governance at scale

Conduktor or Lenses

You need RBAC, audit, masking, policies, GitOps/Terraform, or SQL-driven data exploration across clusters for a whole organisation.

Already on Confluent

Confluent Console / Control Center

Your clusters are Confluent Cloud or Confluent Platform — the vendor console is already there and its monitoring is genuinely good.

Cheap, simple desktop browser

KafkIO or Offset Explorer

You want a lightweight desktop tool to browse topics and messages without running a server — and you don't need deep data workflows.

What each tool is

Tool Form factor Cost model Multi-user Primary strength

Lenses 6 (Community Edition) Self-hosted web (Docker/K8s) Free CE ≤2 clusters & ≤2 users; enterprise paid Yes SQL Studio + data catalog across clusters
  • 1 Conduktor's classic Desktop app reached end-of-life — existing installs can no longer sign in. Conduktor Console is the supported product; Community Edition runs as a single container but still expects a deployment (plus PostgreSQL for production).
  • 2 Confluent Cloud Console works only with Confluent Cloud clusters. Control Center connects to self-managed clusters but production use requires a Confluent Platform enterprise license (a developer license covers single-broker dev).
  • 3 Offset Explorer: free for personal use only; commercial, educational and non-profit use requires a license after the 30-day evaluation (~$139 per named user, volume discounts).
  • 4 Redpanda Console is source-available and free to self-host; some enterprise features (full RBAC, advanced masking) are licensed.

Feature-by-feature, focused on data

This matrix is deliberately data-centric: it leads with what you can do with the records — filtering, test data, live views, movement, automation — and puts admin/governance rows last as context only. Scroll horizontally on smaller screens — the feature column stays pinned.

  • 5 Most tools can increase a topic's partition count — that is topic administration. Streamyard additionally repartitions the data itself: copy into a topic with a different partition layout using selectable deterministic strategies.
  • 6 An MCP endpoint lets external AI agents call the tool's API. Useful, but different from in-product AI that helps you write filters, playbooks, queries and column views. Conduktor's AI skills and Kafbat's MCP are real integrations — we credit them as partial.

Where each tool is strong — and where it falls short on data

Kafbat UI — free OSS web

Kafbat UI

Where it's strong
  • Best free all-round admin UI: topics, brokers, consumers, schemas, Connect
  • CEL message filters + live view in the browser
  • OAuth/LDAP, RBAC, data masking, cloud IAM, MCP server
  • Multi-cluster, actively maintained open source
Falls short on data work
  • Single-topic message browsing; no merged multi-topic workspace
  • CEL is write-an-expression; no field autocomplete or filter library
  • No test-data samples, generators, session vars, or playbooks
  • No XML filtering, custom columns, or file-style topic copying
Conduktor Console — web platform

Conduktor

Where it's strong
  • Governance leader: Gateway proxy, masking, encryption, policies, audit
  • JQ filtering + live tail; schema-aware produce with subject strategies
  • Random data generation + Flow mode producing at a rate
  • Shared views/filters for teams; CLI, Terraform, MCP; free Community Edition
Falls short on data work
  • Server deployment (container + PostgreSQL), not a laptop app
  • Desktop app is end-of-life — installs can no longer sign in
  • No sample library, session variables, playbooks, multi-topic timelines, or repartitioned copying
  • Full governance value lands in paid tiers
Confluent Console / Control Center — vendor

Confluent

Where it's strong
  • Zero setup on Confluent Cloud; schema-aware produce incl. generated bodies
  • Message browser handles up to ~1M records; JSON/CSV download
  • Control Center: genuinely deep monitoring, alerting, ksqlDB, broker metrics
Falls short on data work
  • Tied to Confluent: Cloud Console is Confluent-Cloud-only; C3 needs a Confluent Platform license beyond single-broker dev
  • Filtering is column-level on already-loaded rows — no reusable structured filter language
  • No test-data samples, playbooks, multi-topic timelines, or topic-to-topic copying
Offset Explorer — desktop

Offset Explorer

Where it's strong
  • Mature, dependable desktop browser; free for personal use
  • Find tool with regex, JsonPath, Avro/Protobuf/JSON-Schema decoding, headers
  • Messages viewable as text, hex, JSON, XML; bundled CLI for scripting
Falls short on data work
  • Dated, form-driven UX; grid is pull-based (no real filtered live feed in UI)
  • No saved filter library, samples, generators, playbooks, or multi-topic views
  • Commercial use requires a ~$139/user license
KafkIO — desktop freeware

KafkIO

Where it's strong
  • Fast native desktop, portable mode, zero cost
  • Broad coverage: search + streaming, Schema Registry, Connect, ksqlDB editor, ACLs, broker configs
  • Very configurable security (certs, proxies, SASL mechanisms)
Falls short on data work
  • Search is criteria-based — no reusable structured filter language or saved filter library
  • No test-data generation, samples, session vars, playbooks, or multi-topic views
  • No cloud sync or AI assistance
Redpanda Console — free web

Redpanda Console

Where it's strong
  • Excellent free message viewer: JS push-down filters, auto-detected encodings (incl. XML, Protobuf, MessagePack), hex view
  • Produce, consumer-group offset editing, ACLs, Connect, Schema Registry, masking
  • Works with any Kafka-compatible cluster, not just Redpanda
Falls short on data work
  • Filters are per-session JavaScript — no saved library, autocomplete, or builder
  • No test-data samples, multi-topic timelines, calculated columns, or playbooks
  • RBAC/masking depth tied to enterprise edition
AKHQ — free OSS web

AKHQ

Where it's strong
  • Clean, simple multi-cluster admin; free Apache-2.0
  • Topic data browse, produce, live tail; consumers, Connect, Schema Registry
  • LDAP/RBAC; experimental API + MCP endpoint
Falls short on data work
  • Message search is substring-level only — structured JQ filtering is still an open feature request
  • No samples, generators, playbooks, custom views, or multi-topic workspaces
Lenses 6 CE — web platform

Lenses

Where it's strong
  • Only competitor with true cross-cluster SQL Studio + data catalog
  • Enterprise-grade governance, lineage, processors, alerting; MCP server
  • Free Community Edition covers ≤2 clusters and ≤2 users
Falls short on data work
  • Heavier platform deployment; CE limits are tight for teams
  • SQL exploration is powerful but not a click-driven desktop testing workflow
  • No sample libraries, session variables, playbooks, or merged live timelines
Kafka Streamyard — desktop workbench

Kafka Streamyard

Where it's strong
  • Deepest data toolkit: SL filtering on JSON and XML with autocomplete + AI drafting
  • Live Views merge up to 30 topics with session filters + flow charts; persisted playback
  • Test-data samples, @@generators, session vars, sample loader, playbooks, file-style copy + repartition, task system
  • Custom columns + CSV reports, hex editor, ksqlDB workspace, cloud sync, full in-app help
Falls short — honestly
  • Single-user desktop today: no RBAC, SSO, audit trail, or shared team console — a multi-user web edition is in development on the same codebase (the Electron UI already runs mostly in a browser, and the backend already carries session/device primitives for a performant shared deployment)
  • Commercial (€37.50 once) — not free open source
  • Cloud sync moves your working set between your machines — it is not team sharing
  • No alerting/metrics dashboards — deliberately out of scope: Streamyard is a purely data-centric workbench, and Grafana (or your platform's monitoring) remains the go-to for that job. Smaller, newer vendor.

When Streamyard is not the right choice

Need team governance

Pick Conduktor or Lenses

If you need SSO, RBAC, audit trails, masking policies, data contracts, or organisation-wide self-service, a governance platform is the honest answer. Streamyard is a single-user desktop workbench by design.

Need free + open source

Pick Kafbat UI or Redpanda Console

If your org requires OSS or has zero budget, Kafbat UI and Redpanda Console are genuinely good — you'll browse, produce, filter with CEL or JavaScript, and manage the cluster well.

All-in on Confluent

Use Confluent's console

If everything you run is Confluent Cloud, the built-in console + Control Center monitoring is already paid for and tightly integrated. Streamyard still helps for desktop data work, but the vendor console covers ops.

Monitoring & alerting first

Pick Conduktor, Lenses, or Control Center

Streamyard shows cluster health and consumer lag but deliberately stays data-centric — it is not a monitoring/alerting product. If that's the main job, choose a platform tool, and pair any of these with Grafana for metrics dashboards.

Tools we didn't put in the matrix

Kpow (Factor House)

Strong commercial data UI

Kpow deserves an honourable mention: a well-regarded commercial web UI with solid data inspection (kJQ filters), produce, replay, ksqlDB and a free Community Edition (≤3 clusters). Its per-cluster licensing targets teams rather than individual desktop use.

CLIs: kcat, kaf, kafka-* scripts

Scriptable, not a workbench

kcat (formerly kafkacat), kaf and the bundled kafka-console-* scripts are indispensable in pipelines. They can do almost everything here with enough scripting — but nothing persists, guides, or visualises for you.

IDE plugins & vendor consoles

Close to home, narrow scope

The IntelliJ Kafka plugin and VS Code extensions are handy inside the IDE. Cloud vendors (Aiven, MSK, Instaclustr) ship consoles tied to their managed clusters — convenient, but single-vendor and admin-scoped.

Where Streamyard earns its place

Every tool here can browse a topic. Streamyard is the one built around what you do next: filter JSON and XML with a guided language, save and tag filters to environments, merge up to 30 topics into one filtered live timeline, generate realistic business data, keep samples with session variables, replay them, copy topics like files, automate environment setup with playbooks, and let long jobs run as background tasks — all in a desktop app where your working set persists and syncs between your own machines.

If that sounds like your day, the 14-day trial is free.
